1998: how ASPL brought GPS navigation to India through Garmin

Where GPS stood globally in 1998

The United States' Global Positioning System reached full operational capability, 24 satellites broadcasting continuously, in 1995, and selective availability, the deliberate degradation of civilian GPS accuracy, remained in effect until it was switched off in May 2000. Civilian GPS in 1998 was therefore a genuinely new and still-limited technology: accurate enough to be useful, not yet accurate enough for the precision applications GPS supports today, and largely unfamiliar outside specialist maritime, aviation and military circles.

ASPL's entry into that market

ASPL introduced GPS navigation technology to the Indian market in 1998 through its partnership with Garmin, a company itself only founded in 1989 and still establishing its position in the emerging consumer and professional GPS market at the time. This placed ASPL among the earliest commercial channels bringing satellite navigation technology to Indian operators, well ahead of GPS becoming the everyday, assumed-present technology it is now.

Why this mattered beyond being simply early

Being first to bring a genuinely new navigation technology to a market is not simply a timing advantage; it means building the technical understanding, the installation and support capability, and the customer relationships from a standing start, without an existing playbook to follow. The partnership with Garmin established in 1998 is the same relationship that, over 25 years later, underlies ASPL's current status as a Garmin-certified supplier across aviation, marine and outdoor equipment, covered in more depth in this catalogue's supplier certification content.

What followed from this starting point

The 1998 introduction of GPS to the Indian market was the first of a sequence of milestones that follow directly from it: GPS reaching India's fishing fleet the following year, Indian Navy marine GPS standardisation in 2002, and Dornier aircraft avionics integration in 2004, each covered in more depth in their own dedicated articles elsewhere in this series. None of these later milestones would have had the same foundation without the initial decision to bring an unfamiliar, genuinely new technology into the Indian market in the first place.

Why this history is relevant to a buyer today

  • A 25-plus year relationship with a manufacturer is a genuinely different kind of supplier credential than a recently established distribution agreement, reflecting sustained technical capability rather than a point-in-time arrangement.
  • Early entry into a market segment generally corresponds to deeper accumulated troubleshooting and installation experience across a wider range of legacy and current equipment than a newer entrant would have encountered.
  • For buyers weighing supplier longevity as part of a procurement decision, covered in more depth in this catalogue's regulatory and compliance content, a documented history predating most competitors' presence in the market is a genuine, checkable fact rather than a marketing claim.

ASPL has represented and serviced Garmin equipment in India continuously since this 1998 introduction, and the aviation, marine and outdoor GPS range covered throughout this catalogue is the direct continuation of that original partnership.
