Any operation needing real range, a warehouse of meaningful size, a multi-building site, outdoor coverage beyond a small area, will find PMR446's 0.5 W output genuinely limiting in a way no amount of clever antenna placement fully overcomes, since the power ceiling itself is the binding constraint. It also offers none of the advanced features, digital calling, trunking, GPS, covered elsewhere in this series for licensed commercial equipment, and CTCSS-based privacy, while useful for avoiding accidental cross-talk with other nearby PMR446 users, is not genuine encryption or security.
The honest comparison
